  • Summer Learning Loss | Noggin Foundation

Summer learning loss is the loss of academic skills and knowledge over the course of summer vacation.  This loss varies across grade level, subject matter, and Summer Learning Loss Explained NBC's Brian Williams explains Summer Learning Loss or "Summer Slide" and the Achievement Gap. Summer learning loss is the loss of academic skills and knowledge over the course of summer vacation. This loss varies across grade level, subject matter, and family income. Studies show that over the summer most students lose two months of math computation skills. Low-income students lose more than two months in reading achievement while middle income students maintain or gain due to access to summer programs and other enrichment opportunities. Losses accumulate over years eventually resulting in students that perform below their grade level. By 5th grade many low-income students are the equivalent of two to three grades behind. Much of this achievement gap can be attributed to summer learning loss.

Doneda Bailey serves as Executive Director.  A successful background About Us 2022 Annual Report 2023 Annual Report 2024 Annual Report 2025 Annual Report "When my husband David started teaching 14 years ago he didn’t realize the obstacles he would encounter in the classroom. His first teaching assignment was in a Title I school where he was given one ream of paper to last for the entire semester teaching 125 students. The lack of resources combined with students who were 2-3 grade levels behind left an impression on both of us. His next teaching assignment was in stark contrast. This school was in an affluent area where he had unlimited resources and students excelled. As I heard story after story about his students, a desire to meet the needs of students like the ones he first encountered grew in me. I knew I could and should do something about it."
